The O uter B anks ROX!!
Ominotago means "beautiful voice". That's a perfect name for this new acoustic duo from Richmond. They played their first Outer Banks gig at Mulligans on July 30th, a few weeks before their first anniversary. They've already released their first indie CD and are looking ahead to the next. Chelsea is pure enthusiasm. Beau is laid back and easy going. Buoyed up by rich vocals and the exuberance of youth, their show is a fresh treat. Video Clips.
Sea Level at Bushwackers. There's a saying from eastern philosophy - "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts". Sea Level is Larry Griffin on guitar and D'Laine Evans on bass and percussion. They share the vocals. Individually, they're both first rate musicians. Put them together, and that more than what you started with thing happens. Video Clips
LP and Scape Goats at The Pit. Our own Noah Garrett (is there anything this guy doesn't do - or doesn't do well?) opened for LP at The Pit on Sat. 6/19/04. This was my first time seeing LP. I'm trying not to use expletives here - but describing LP without 'em is a chore. Believe me - LP ROX!! Songs from her new CD (to be released June 29th) are already starting to show up on the local air waves. Check out these video clips from the show and you'll see what the excitement is about.
Phil Chestnutt at Bushwacker's. Phil Chestnutt has been an Outer Banks regular for many years. He's a well seasoned musician playing a broad repertoire of soft rock and pop with a little country sprinkled in.
Mojo Collins at the Brewing Station. I think I was still a teenager the first time I saw Mojo in Raleigh, NC. He's been playing guitar for over 50 years now. He made the Outer Banks his home for about 20 of those. The list of musicians he's shared the stage with will make you dizzy. He lives in Wilmington, NC now but you can often catch him at the Brewing Station. Don't miss it. Click Here for his website.
Drivin' Blind at Mulligans. Drivin' Blind is a trio of local guys that formed up last year. Back with a new 2nd guitarist, their show is always worth catching. Be sure to take a cab home - it's safer that way.
Larry Griffin and Josh at Mulligans. Larry Griffin moved his family to the Outer Banks last year. He's been playing here locally for a number of years - sometimes with his full band, Gryphon. Son Josh often shows up to help dad get through the night. Click here for Larry's website.
Mercy Creek at Chilli Peppers. Jim Ball and Cheryl Nystrom set out to be full time musicians in 1998. Four CD's and countless performances later, they are still going strong and beginning to get the recognition they deserve. I saw Mercy Creek for the first time in 1998 and I've seldom missed one of their local shows since. You can find more info on their website.
Kirsten Thien playing Kelly's. I don't know where she got the idea, but Kirsten decided to come down from NYC and play the Green Dolphin in Manteo a few months ago. She's been back a couple of times since and booked several shows locally over the next couple of months. She's definitely added some spice and class to the Outer Banks music scene. (Video Clip!)
